Olympia tournament in Helsingborg
2003-09-08

Martin Larsen pleases homecrowd.

The second stop of the Super Series-Tour was conducted at Swedish international Patrick Backes bowlingcenter in Helsingborg in southern Sweden.

The match-play format for the finals that already in Aalborg was adapted half-way trough the finals there was now adapted from the start of the top-48 field that went trough to the finals. This novelty proved to be an tremendous succes for the spectators point of view and for the players as well.

Best of five-matches all the way until the TV-show where the TV-format demand only one game per match.
All the big names made it to the finals but step by step names like Mika Kouvuniemi and Tim Mack faced opponents that had other plans for them.
One of the more spectacular matches was played by the young and promising Osku Palerma from Finland and Swedens Göran Karlsson.
Osku started with an perfecto and shot 288 in the third game to eventually find himself beaten by 3-2 by his opponent. Despite a totalscore of 1236 over five games! Görans totalscore was "only" 1206. That is what Match-play is all about.

The two semifinals and the final was brodcasted live in Sweden and Denmark and saw two Finish international stars in semifinal-1 . Petri Mannonen ousted quite easily his team-mate Lasse Lintilä scoring 257 against a struggeling Lintilä who ended up with a 188-game.

The second semifinal saw two of the most popular caracters in the field, Swedish local hero, Martin Larsen and the Mexican "jumping bean", Arturo Quintero. The Swede showed no mercy at all and with 10 strikes out of 12 he posted a 266 games despite a miss at the tenpin. Quintero´s 214 was classy but not enough at this level.

The tension from both finalist was clear but still bowling on highest level from both Finland´s Mannonen and Martin Larsen from Team Pergamon, Sweden.
Martin took the advantage of playing two consecutive games while the Finn had too wait after his semi-final. 217-203 in favor for Martin and a very worthy winner could collect the winners-check of 100 000 Skr ($ 11 000) The total price-money was $63 000 distributed amongst the top-48 from 14 countries.
The reactions from media, spectators and players made it perfectly clear that the new format has come to stay for quite some time.

Next stop for the Super Series will be Moss in Norway. If You don´t come over to bowl, You are very welcome to watch. It´s not a common tournament. It´s Super Series!
See You all there!
