One step beyond.
2006-08-17

When Mika Koivuniemi scored 1516 in the qualification of Olympia Tournament in 2003 everyone said that it couldn’t be any better. And no one has ever stepped over the threshold to the1500 since. Until today when another excellent player with PBA experience stepped over the line, and then took one step beyond. The Norwegian Swede Tore Torgersen did a remarkable performance on the lanes in Helsingborg.

With a series of games where the lowest was a 235 and the highest was a perfect one he landed on a total of 1523. No doubt about that he will be in the Top 8 in the qualification.

- It hasn’t been any bowling during the summer. Only shorts, crab fish, and some few beers in our summer cottage for weeks, and of course a lot of time with Tone (Tore and Linda’s new borne baby). Then I went to Evje the last weekend and get a lot of games in competition. I ended up as number seven and get the feeling of bowling back again.
- My first squad in Helsingborg wasn’t too good. But today I drilled a Hammer ball called Black Widow and it really made the trick. Only strikes and nine’s all the time. Now I have the target for winning this tournament. It seems to me that it is my turn because the lanes of Olympia are my play ground and I have been so close so many times.

The fourth squad was even better than the first one. Second best score in the early Thursday squad was a very familiar foreign face in Sweden. Tim Mack (pictured below) showed the audience that he definitely is on the right way back to the top.
- I played well in Bahrain and I did some real good results in Las Vegas. I improve all the time and I have the feeling that I play my Bowling OK right now. Still I have some way to go and still I play ply with a 14 lbs ball. I’m satisfied for the 1421 and I’m satisfied that I will be in the final here in Helsingborg on Sunday.

Tim did a great tournament in LA. Especially the MoRich Over and Under Doubles in pair with his former team mate Terry Leong. In an interview Terry was overwhelmed by Tim as a person:
“Tim’s positive energy is off the chart,”
said Leong. “In international bowling, he’s
Michael Jordan, and the work he does off
the lanes with kids and fans is wonderful.”

Another two players managed to put 14 in the beginning of their score. Jouni Kemppainen and the former champion Mathias Årup. Jouni have done some radical changes in his life. And the score is a good proof that the changes affect him in a positive way.
- I feel more confident than ever before when I play my bowling. On Sunday I will first get a good score for reaching the match-play and then… No player is to difficult for me if every part in my bowling is in order.

A lot of practice is the recipe for success when you ask Mathias Årup.
- I have spent much time in the practice mood the last six weeks, says Mathias. My trainer Sten-Åke Nilsson has helped me all the time. And when I play my bowling I get the feeling that I find the right solutions and pick up the right ball more often than before.

From the last squad only one player get a result good for the final. Mikael Kanold had a big show time in 5 games and was heading for 1500. 270 over par and an avg. of 254 but the last game were of no high class at all, 158. But 1428 will be good for the final but not for the4 Top 8.
